On behalf of the NIPM/OSD Planning Circle, we warmly invite you to join us in celebrating Mzawe Kiing Anishinaabek Giizis (National Indigenous Peoples Month) at Toronto Metropolitan University.

What to expect

We are pleased to begin this year’s programming with a virtual kick-off event on June 1, marking a meaningful time of recognition, reflection, and celebration of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, cultures, and contributions.

June is Mzawe Kiing Anishinaabek Giizis / National Indigenous Peoples Month at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), a time to honour and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.

Please join us virtually in honouring Indigenous voices, experiences and achievements. Let’s celebrate this month together in a good way!

Join us at Toronto Metropolitan University as we kick off Mzawe Kiing Anishinaabek Giizis (National Indigenous Peoples Month) with a vibrant Indigenous Arts & Craft Market celebrating the creativity, culture, and entrepreneurship of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis artists and makers.

What to expect

This special event will feature:

• Handmade beadwork, jewelry, and textiles
• Indigenous visual art and prints
• Traditional and contemporary crafts
• Indigenous-owned small businesses

Meet talented Indigenous artists, learn about their creative processes, and support local Indigenous entrepreneurs. This market is an opportunity to honour the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples while fostering meaningful engagement within the TMU and broader Toronto community.

The event is free and open to students, staff, faculty, and community members.

Come celebrate, shop with purpose, and help us launch National Indigenous Peoples Month in a good way.

We are hosting a planting activity for the future Indigenous Healing Garden. 

Rain date will be June 8.

What to expect

Participants will sign up to transplant plants/seedlings that were potted in April during TRSM’s Friends and Flowers planting event. Those plants will be ready to be transplanted into the future Indigenous Healing Garden for the summer season. The event aims to provide a calm, grounding experience that integrates Indigenous knowledge around the use of plants to promote personal health and wellness while also contributing to a shared living space. Due to courtyard space, registration will be capped at 40 participants.

Native pollinators, Indigenous plant medicines, flowers and herbs will be planted into the garden. Gardening equipment (i.e. tools, gloves) and hands-on instruction will be provided during the event.

Light refreshments will be served.

Dress comfortably (in clothes that might get dirty), bring sunscreen, a hat, and wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes.
