Fighting for Food Security

Nutritious food is a human right. We believe that governments should take responsibility for funding social support systems to alleviate student poverty and hunger. In the interim, communities are stepping in to ensure fairness and stability in food systems. This campaign fights for adequate access to good and affordable food for students while ensuring environmental sustainability and proper accessibility. We aim to raise awareness of food insecurity and to show solidarity with migrant workers, who face dangerous and exploitative working conditions in order to produce food for the profit of large corporations.

The “Whose Hungry” report in Toronto reveals that a significant number of students, including a large percentage of international students, are experiencing food insecurity. The report indicates that food bank usage has increased drastically, with nearly a million more visits in Toronto compared to the previous year. This rise in food insecurity is impacting students’ ability to afford groceries and basic necessities, leading some to rely on food banks or even skip meals. Click here to read the report.

Due to Covid-19, the distribution of food on-campus to fight food insecurity has been limited.
