Education for All

Students across Canada are saying that COVID-19 has made it more difficult to afford post-secondary education. The pandemic and the high cost of tuition fees has left us facing even more precarious financial situations than we were in before. However, the pandemic has highlighted what students and workers already know; education is underfunded and unaffordable. Underfunding leads to increases in precarious work, an over-reliance on international student tuition fees and tuition fees as a whole, cuts to programs and services and an overall reduction in the quality of education.

For decades, students across the province have been demanding educational reform and a post-secondary education system that puts students’ interests first. Ontario students pay some of the highest tuition fees in the country, with international students’ paying 3-4 times what domestic students pay. In the past few years, we have seen significant cuts to student financial assistance, housing prices and tuition fees increasing, and overall cuts to public services. Access to education is key to creating a more just and equal society, and will be a critical pillar in responding to the COVID-19 crisis and ensuring a successful social and economic recovery.
